David Michael Slater's entertaining and educational presentation on his book CHEESE LOUISE! and on the processes of writing and publishing was a delightful feature of our library's recent "Meet the Authors" night. Children in the audience were immediately engaged by Slater's clever slide show and responded enthusiastically to the author's cues. It was apparent throughout that Slater has had much experience in getting and holding the interest of a group of children, and in craftily getting them to learn even while they're having fun.
-- Wayne C. Grimm, Librarian, Tigard Public Library
David Michael Slater, with his clever sense of humor, gives an informative and entertaining presentation on the writing process and the publishing of his books for children. I highly recommend his book and slide presentations for all ages!
-- Debbie Seawell, Media Specialist, Bethany Elementary School
David Michael Slater was informative, funny and creative when he visited with us. He showed all the ways of writing a story, and you could see in his eyes how much he loves writing. His book is very creative. He's nice.
-- Willamette 7 Book Club, Fowler Middle School
David Michael Slater visited our 4th and 5th grade students and tailored his presentation to coincide perfectly with classroom curriculum. He reinforced what teachers had taught and added a few words of wisdom of his own in a way that was very fun, engaging, and memorable. Our kids still quote him!
-- Janel Watson, Media Specialist, Scholls Heights Elementary School
David Slater does a great job of sharing with young audiences his love of writing and books. Through an entertaining and informative slide presentation, Mr. Slater walks kids through the complete process of writing from brainstorming to final draft. He also teaches Plot. His presentations were well-received by both children and adults.
-- John Lucas, Media Specialist, Oak Hills School
David Slater made Read Across America Day at our school. What could be better than an author reading his own book. . . plus talking about the writing process itself. . . plus introducing kids to the publishing game! I honestly won't be surprised if one or two students someday write a book and look back on this day as the first time they pictured themselves doing it.
-- Francine Fitzpatrick, Media Specialist, Beaver Acres Elementary
If there is anyone who hasn't had David Slater come do an author visit, you are missing a treat. We finally booked David at Hiteon. He was so easy to work with -- arrived early, met with a full day of grade level assemblies, made everyone laugh, and left them with memorable, entertaining ideas about what it's like to write, edit, persevere, and finally publish. Staff and our visiting principal stopped me in the hall to tell me how good David's presentation was. When I asked students today what they learned about writing, I kept hearing David's central messages: edit your work, have other people read it, you'll hear a lot of rejections before you succeed.
-- Holly Cohn, Media Specialist, Hiteon Elementary School
